Wear dark-coloured clothing that covers your shoulders and chest. Look directly at the camera, keep your eyes open and mouth closed, and remove glasses.

Religious head coverings are permitted as long as the face remains clearly visible.

Do not rely on the office providing a jacket.

What Does “Refer to Immigration Office” Mean?

A referral usually means the application needs manual verification.

Possible reasons include:

• Biometric mismatch.
• Incorrect or inconsistent passport information.
• Changed personal details.
• A lost or damaged passport.
• A photo that cannot be verified.

Bring your MyKad, old passport and any supporting documents to the office stated in the instructions.

A referral does not necessarily mean the application has been rejected.

Can You Walk In Without QMS?

It depends on the office and service.

What to Expect at the Office

In non peak periods, counters move steadily. During school holidays or long weekends, waiting times double or triple. 

Officers at UTC branches handle more evening traffic, while state Immigration offices move faster during morning hours.

A common situation involves applicants losing their QMS slot for arriving too late. Officers usually cannot reinstate expired numbers.

Editors Note: I personally went to renew my passport at UTC Pudu and didn’t know about the QMS system until the officers informed me.

Although they limit 100 queue numbers on the QMS system, it appears another round of queue would be opened after 8 AM.

My recommendation if you want to renew passport is to do:

• Book the appointment on weekdays
• Get the queue number that opens at 6 AM (numbers goes out quickly)
• And see which number you get, you get a notification when it is almost your turn.

My number was 122 and the whole process took between 8 AM –  2PM, including payment and collection. And please be nice and respectful to the officers.

10-Year Passport (June 2026)

As of June 2026, Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above can now apply for a 10-year passport for RM350.

Senior citizens aged 60 and above pay a total of RM175, while disabled individuals aged 18 and above who are officially registered and hold an OKU card can get the passport free of charge. Officers or staff of the Immigration Department of Malaysia can also apply for free.

Can You Renew Early?

Yes. You do not need to wait until the passport expires.
